Brandon Teena was a transman who was murdered for breaking gender norms. Teena was born a female, but later Teena identified as a male and began to wear masculine clothing. He wanted to pass as a male in high school and started to date women. Later on, he moved to Falls City, Nebraska in 1993 to enter a new chapter of his life to fully live as a male and as Brandon Teena. Soon, he befriended John Lotter and Marvin Nissen who played a pertinent role behind his murder. Considering that Brandon was passing as a male, but then he was caught by the police for passing bad check. It led the police to discover and release information in the public that Brandon was a genetically born female. This story brought attention to John Lotter and Marvin Nissen and they confronted Brandon about his gender identity on Christmas Eve. Then, Lotter and Nissen raped and assaulted Brandon, which led Brandon to seek out authority for help to get protection against Lotter and Nissen. Even though, Brandon got help from the police about his case; the police were not able to find evidence indicating that Lotter and Nissen had raped Brandon. On New Year’s Eve, Brandon Teena was brutally shot and murdered by Nissen and Lotter because they wanted to prevent Teena from testifying the reason why they raped him. Brandon Teena’s story made headlines which touch upon the concerns of hate crime against lesbians, gays, and transgendered people.
